Under 49 CFR part 573, NHTSA requires manufacturers of motor vehicles and motor vehicle equipment to notify the agency when a manufacturer determines that a defect or noncompliance exists in vehicles or equipment it produces; to report the manufacturer's progress in conducting recall campaigns it is administering; to maintain a list of purchasers, owners, dealers, distributors, lessors and lessees of its products; and to make recall information available on manufacturers' Websites. This rulemaking would update 49 CFR part 573 in compliance with the Fixing America's Surface Transportation Act to require manufacturers to provide the name and description of the components and the part or component number of the components involved in a defect or noncompliance on the information reports filed with the agency.
