This notice proposes new Federal motor vehicle safety standards (FMVSS) for the fuel container and fuel system of hydrogen and fuel cell vehicles. The proposed rule considers aligning with the requirements specified in global technical regulation (GTR) No. 13, Hydrogen and fuel cell vehicles. NHTSA is considering proposed requirements to mitigate burst and explosion of high pressure hydrogen fuel containers during normal vehicle operations, involvement in a vehicle fire, and post-crash, and mitigate the risk of fire due to hydrogen leakage during normal vehicle operation and post-crash.
