This FMVSS assumes the presence of a human driver and requires vehicles to be equipped with mirrors and a rearview image display. This update will address the requirements for vehicles equipped with Automated Driving Systems (ADS) that lack human drivers, by establishing functional requirements pertaining to detection of the test cylinders (standardized objects that simulate small obstacles such as a child) specified in FMVSS No. 111. The test cylinder dimensions and locations will be the same for vehicles with and without manually operated driving controls. This rulemaking will not modify any requirements for school buses.
