<p>This rulemaking would amend the NRC&rsquo;s regulations to ensure groundwater protection at <em>in situ </em> leach uranium recovery facilities. The rule would create a more efficient licensing process by codifying requirements currently imposed through license conditions. The rule would affect in situ leach uranium recovery facility licensees and applicants.&nbsp;</p>

        <ADDITIONAL_INFO>On October 18, 2018, the EPA published a withdrawal of its proposed rule in the Federal Register (83 FR 54543). On January 31, 2019 (84 FR 574), NRC published a request for comment soliciting views from interested stakeholders on whether the NRC should resume rulemaking to amend its regulations governing the domestic licensing of source material by codifying general requirements to address ground water protection at uranium in situ recovery facilities.

A document was published in the Federal Register on March 1, 2019 (84 FR 6979), extending the comment period for this action. The comment period closed on May 3, 2019.  Staff provided recommendations for next steps on this rulemaking to the Commission as part of SECY-19-1023, &quot;Regulatory Options for Uranium In Situ Recovery Facilities,&quot; dated December 16, 2019.  On July 23, 2021, staff submitted the proposed rule to the Commission in SECY-21-0067.</ADDITIONAL_INFO>
