The final rule amends the Commission's regulations by revising its generic determinations on the environmental impacts of storage of spent fuel at or away from reactor sites after the expiration of a reactor's operating license. The rulemaking will, among other items, address the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit's directives on remand.

Although public meetings are not required for rulemaking, the extension of the comment period also allowed the NRC to reschedule all meetings related to this rulemaking that were cancelled due to the government shutdown. Accordingly, the expected completion date changed to October 2014. The Commission approved publication of the final rule and the associated generic environmental impact statement on August 26, 2014. Publication of the final rule is expected in September 2014.
