Title: FMVSS No. 124, Accelerator Control Systems Upgrade
Abstract: This rulemaking would upgrade FMVSS No. 124 to bring it up-to-date and resolve questions about how to treat new electronic accelerator control systems, or any systems other than purely mechanical ones, which were the only kind in use when FMVSS No. 124 was last amended in 1973. The agency has had to issue a number of interpretations about the applicability of FMVSS No. 124 to electronic components and connections and by specifying new compliance test procedures. This is increasingly necessary as mechanical linkages are phased out altogether in favor of throttle-by-wire systems with no direct mechanical linkage between the accelerator pedal and the throttle on the engine.
