Title: ●Atlantic Highly Migratory Species; Atlantic Shark Management Measures
Abstract: This rulemaking would evaluate the management measures for several shark species based on recent shark stock assessments. The rulemaking could consider, among other things, a range of commercial and recreational management measures in both directed and incidental shark fisheries including, but not limited to: quota levels, regional and seasonal quotas, retention limits, gear modifications, and time/area closures. In addition, this rulemaking would implement a rebuilding plan for scalloped hammerhead sharks, as NMFS recently determined that scalloped hammerhead sharks are overfished with overfishing occurring (April 28, 2011, 76 FR 23794) based on a stock assessment adopted in 2011 for this species. Sandbar, dusky, and blacknose sharks are currently being assessed with the final results expected to be released in mid-2011. Based on the results of these assessments, NMFS may need to re-evaluate current management measures for these species.
