HUD/PIH RIN: 2577-AC97 Publication ID: Spring 2017
Title: Instituting Smoke-Free Public Housing (FR-5597)
Abstract:

This final rule would require each public housing agency (PHA) administering public housing to implement a smoke-free policy. Specifically, this rule would provide that no later than 18 months from the effective date of the final rule, each PHA must implement a policy requiring that all units, indoor common areas, and PHA administrative buildings be free from lit tobacco products (smoke-free policy). The smoke-free policy shall also extend 25 feet from the covered buildings. HUD's implementation of a smoke-free policy in public housing seeks to improve the health of public housing residents and PHA staff, reduce the risk of catastrophic fires, and lower overall maintenance costs.
