The Access Board has prepared a final rule establishing accessibility standards for medical diagnostic equipment (MDE Standards) used in or in conjunction with medical settings, such as physicians' offices, clinics, emergency rooms, and hospitals. The Standards contain minimum technical criteria to ensure that medical diagnostic equipment, including examination tables, examination chairs, weight scales, mammography equipment, and other imaging equipment used by health care providers for diagnostic purposes are accessible to and usable by individuals with disabilities. This final rule is advisory and is not binding until adopted by an enforcing authority. The Access Board published a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) in the Federal Register in 2012 (77 FR 6916, February 9, 2012), and subsequently established an advisory committee for this rulemaking (77 FR 14706, March 13, 2012; 77 FR 39656, July 5, 2012).
