Title: ●Taking and Importing Marine Mammals; Taking Marine Mammals Incidental to Testing and Training Activities Conducted in the Eglin Gulf Test and Training Range | |
Abstract:
The National Marine Fisheries Service plans to issue proposed regulations to govern the unintentional taking of marine mammals incidental to testing and training activities in the Eglin Gulf Test and Training Range. The Eglin Gulf Test and Training Range encompasses the area and airspace over the Gulf of Mexico controlled by Eglin Air Force Base beginning at a point three nautical miles off the coast of Florida for a period of five years. While there have been different authorizations issued in the past for the Base's various activities, these proposed regulations would supersede them and authorize all of Eglin Air Force Base's testing and training activities, including Weapons System Evaluations Program activities, into one new rule. The proposed regulations will set forth permissible methods of taking; other means of effecting the least practicable adverse impact on the affected species or stocks and their habitats (i.e. mitigation); and requirements pertaining to the monitoring and reporting of such taking. Letters of Authorization issued annually under the regulations would authorize the take of marine mammals incidental to the specified activities. |
