Title: Endangered and Threatened Wildlife and Plants; Establishing a Nonessential Experimental Population of the California Condor in the Pacific Northwest | |
Abstract:
The California condor is listed as an endangered species, except in a portion of Arizona, Utah, and Nevada, where it was reintroduced as a nonessential experimental population (NEP). Nearly extinct in the 1980s, the California condor has rebounded from a low of only 22 individuals to more than 275 condors in the wild in three geographically separate areas (southern and central California; Baja California, Mexico; and Arizona/Utah). The proposed rule seeks to establish another population of condors centered on Redwood National Park; the boundaries would encompass northern California, northwestern Nevada, and the entire State of Oregon. The population would be an NEP, which would minimize socioeconomic impacts associated with reintroducing a federally endangered species. The purpose of this proposed rule is to further our conservation efforts to recover this iconic species. |
