Title: ●Endangered and Threatened Wildlife and Plants; Critical Habitat Designation for the Suwannee Mocassinshell | |
Abstract:
On October 16, 2016, we determined threatened species status under the Endangered Species Act for the Suwannee moccasinshell (Medionidus walkeri), a freshwater mussel species from the Suwannee River Basin in Florida and Georgia. As a result, the species is now listed on the List of Endangered and Threatened Wildlife. We are required by the Act to designate critical habitat, to the maximum extent prudent and determinable, for any species that is determined to be a threatened or endangered species. The Secretary designates critical habitat on the basis of the best available scientific data after taking into consideration the economic impact, national security impact, and any other relevant impact of specifying any particular area as critical habitat. |
