Title: ●Updating the Petition Process for Exemption From Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards | |
Abstract:
This notice seeks comment on whether updating certain provisions of NHTSA's regulation (49 CFR part 555) regarding the processing of petitions for exemption from Federal motor vehicle safety standards (FMVSS) could improve the process for reviewing innovative safety technologies. The existing regulation defines a process for the receipt, review and processing of applications for exemption from the FMVSS. Because the regulation was developed prior to the introduction of certain technological innovations, including digital technologies, power train alternative designs and advanced safety technologies, it is appropriate to seek comment on the need for and the benefits of improving and streamlining existing requirements for the submission and review of petitions for exemption from the FMVSS. |
