DOT/NHTSA RIN: 2127-AL98 Publication ID: Spring 2018
Title: ●Updating the Petition Process for Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards
Abstract:

This notice seeks comment on whether updating certain provisions of NHTSA's regulation (49 CFR parts 552 and 553) regarding the processing of petitions for Federal motor vehicle safety standards (FMVSS) could improve the process for reviewing innovative safety technologies. The existing regulation defines a process for the receipt, review and processing of petitions for rulemaking and petitions for reconsideration. Because these regulations were developed prior to the introduction of certain technological innovations, including digital technologies, power train alternative designs and advanced safety technologies, it is appropriate to seek comment on the need for and the benefits of improving and streamlining existing requirements for these administrative processes.
