Title: Trawl Rationalization Program Trailing Action; Modification and Removal of Trawl Gear Regulations for Vessels Fishing in the Trawl Rationalization Program
Abstract: The Pacific Fishery Management Council (Council) has recommended the removal of several trawl gear regulations which were originally implemented 10-20 years ago. These regulations govern the configuration of the trawl gear, as well as specific area requirements for certain gear types. With the implementation of the Trawl Rationalization Program in 2011 and the movement from a trip limit fishery to an individual fishing quota program, these regulations are no longer necessary. It is expected that this action would allow for increased efficiency for the trawl fleet as vessel operators would be allowed more flexibility in the use and configuration of their trawl gear.
