Title: ●Hazardous Materials: Compatibility with the Regulations of the International Atomic Energy Agency
Abstract:

In coordination with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), this rulemaking would harmonize the Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR; 49 CFR parts 100-185) for packaging and transportation of radioactive material with the international safety regulations, "Specific Safety Requirements No. SSR-6, 'Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Material,'" published by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in 2012 (SSR-6, 2012 Edition) and in 2018 (SSR-6, 2018 Edition). Specifically, this rulemaking adds a new category of Surface Contaminated Objects (SCO-III) for large solid objects, which due to their size and weight cannot reasonably be transported in a package. These provisions will provide an enhanced level of safety while removing regulatory burden on industry stakeholders.
