At their June 2019 meeting, the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council (Council) approved a motion to request a control date of March 7, 2019, be established for the commercial Spanish mackerel fishery. The Council may, or may not, use the control date to determine future participation in the fishery while the Council evaluates the level of participation in the commercial sector and discusses possible avenues to control effort, including but not limited to: a limited access commercial permit, a limited access gillnet endorsement in the Atlantic southern zone (North Carolina/South Carolina boundary to the Miami-Dade/Monroe County, Florida boundary), and collaboration with state agencies. This action provides notice to the public of the Council's control date, and advance notice that additional management measures may be implemented through rulemaking.
