Title: Updating the Petition Process for Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards | |
Abstract:
This action seeks public comment on whether NHTSA's proposed updates for the processing of petitions (49 CFR parts 552 and 553) for FMVSS would improve the process for reviewing innovative safety technologies. The existing regulations define a process for the receipt, review, and processing of both the petitions for rulemaking and petitions for reconsideration. Because these regulations were developed prior to the introduction of complex technological innovations encompassing multiple regulations, it is appropriate to seek comment on the need for and the benefits of improving and streamlining existing requirements for the submission and review of these petitions. |
