Title: Fair Housing Act Design and Construction Requirements; Compliance With ANSI A117.1 Standards (FR-6138) | |
Abstract:
This rule proposes to amend HUD's regulations with respect to the design and construction requirements of the Fair Housing Act and its amendments by updating and clarifying the references of the American Standards Institute (ANSI) building standards for accessibility. ANSI standards are the technical standards for the design of housing facilities that are accessible to persons with disabilities. These are commonly known as the ANSI A117.1 standards. Compliance with the ANSI A117.1 building standards for accessibility satisfies the accessibility requirements of the Fair Housing Act and its amendments. This rule proposes to update the references to the ANSI A117.1 building standards to adopt the 2009 edition of the standards. This rule would also designate editions of the International Building Code (IBC) as safe harbors under the Fair Housing Act. The IBC is a model building code and not law that has been adopted as law by various states and localities. |
