DOC/NOAA RIN: 0648-BJ26 Publication ID: Fall 2020
Title: International Fisheries; Pacific Tuna Fisheries; 2021-2022 Commercial Fishing Restrictions for Pacific Bluefin Tuna in the Eastern Pacific Ocean
Abstract:

NMFS intends to propose a rule to implement a binding resolution that is expected to be adopted by the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC) in the late fall of 2020. This resolution is expected to establish commercial Pacific bluefin tuna catch limits applicable to 2021 and, possibly, 2022. Similar catch limits have been in place since 2015 and the future Resolution is expected to either maintain or increase the catch limit, providing either similar or reduced economic burden to the U.S. fishing industry. Pacific bluefin tuna is severely overfished throughout the Pacific Ocean, and commercial catch limits are necessary to aid in rebuilding of the stock. Limits on catch are strongly supported by the environmental community and are expected by domestic commercial fishing interests. NMFS will implement this resolution by regulation under the Tuna Conventions Act.
