DOE/EE RIN: 1904-AE07 Publication ID: Fall 2020
Title: Energy Conservation Standards for Evaporatively-Cooled Commercial Package Air Conditioners and Water-Cooled Commercial Package Air Conditioners
Abstract:

The Energy Policy and Conservation Act (EPCA), as amended, requires the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to evaluate its standards for each class of covered equipment once every 6 years.  This equipment includes small, large, and very large water-cooled and evaporatively-cooled commercial package air conditioning and heating equipment (WCUACs and ECUACs) (42 U.S.C. 6311(1)(B) to (D)). If DOE determines that amended standards would result in significant additional conservation of energy and are technologically feasible and economically justified, DOE must publish a notice of proposed rulemaking; otherwise, DOE must publish a notice regarding its determination that the standards do not need to be amended. Once completed, this rulemaking will fulfill DOE’s statutory obligation to either propose amended standards for this equipment or determine that the standards do not need to be amended.  DOE has tentatively determined that the standards for small (cooling capacity less than 135,000 Btu/h), large (cooling capacity greater than or equal to 135,000 and less than 240,000 Btu/h), and very large (cooling capacity greater than or equal to 240,000 and less than 760,000 Btu/h) ECUACs and WCUACs do not need to be amended.
