Title: Test Procedures for Consumer Furnaces | |
Abstract:
During this rulemaking, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) may propose to revise its test procedures for consumer furnaces established under the Energy Policy and Conservation Act (EPCA), as amended. EPCA requires DOE to amend test procedures with respect to consumer furnaces at least once every 7 years, if it determines that amended test procedures would more accurately produce test results which measure energy efficiency, and would not be unduly burdensome to conduct, or make a determination that the test procedures do not need to be amended. This rulemaking will evaluate the need to amend the current test procedures for this product. Once completed, this rulemaking will fulfill DOE’s statutory obligation to either propose amended test procedures for this product or determine that the existing test procedures do not need to be amended. DOE notes that on October 12, 2018, DOE received a petition for rulemaking from the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) asking DOE to initiate notice-and-comment rulemaking to develop a new, unified test procedure for consumer furnaces which would replace the three currently required performance metrics (including the metrics for furnaces, furnace fans, and standby mode/off mode energy consumption with a single new metric. |
