Title: Federal Recognition of Tribes Under Alaska IRA | |
Abstract:
This rule will establish criteria and procedures for groups seeking recognition as Tribes under the Alaska Indian Reorganization Act (Alaska IRA), which is separate and distinct from the Indian Reorganization Act of 1934 (IRA), which has its own set of regulations for seeking recognition as Tribes. The Alaska IRA provides that groups of Indians in Alaska having a common bond of occupation, or association, or residence within a well-defined neighborhood, community, or rural district may organize to adopt constitutions and bylaws and receive charters of incorporation and Federal loans. This rule will also establish what documents are required to apply. To date, there has been no regulatory process or criteria established for seeking recognition under the Alaska IRA. |
