Title: Gas Appliance Carbon Monoxide Sensors | |
Abstract:
Over several years, staff has conducted research and worked with voluntary standards organizations concerning the risk of injury and death associated with carbon monoxide (CO) production and leakage from residential gas furnaces and boilers. In 2019, the Commission issued an advance notice of proposed rulemaking (ANPRM) to initiate rulemaking under the Consumer Product Safety Act and request comments on the risk of injury and alternative approaches to address the risk. Staff continues to investigate sensing technology to automatically adjust or shut off major natural-gas appliances such as furnaces and boilers in response to abnormal operating levels of carbon monoxide in their combustion products and will share its findings with the relevant voluntary standards organizations. Staff will develop a notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) briefing package and submit it to the Commission in FY 2022. |
