Title: ●Pacific Island Fisheries; 2022-2025 Annual Catch Limits and Accountability Measures for Hawaii Archipelago Deepwater Shrimp and Precious Coral Fisheries | |
Abstract:
Consistent with the Fishery Ecosystem Plan for the Hawaii Archipelago (FEP) and Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act section 304(b), the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) proposes to implement 2022-2025 annual catch limits (ACL) and accountability measures (AM) for the deepwater shrimp and precious coral fisheries in the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone around the Hawaii Archipelago. As an AM, if NMFS and the Council determine that the average catch from the most recent three-year period exceeds an ACL, we would reduce the ACL in the subsequent fishing year by the amount of the overage. The proposed action is intended to provide for sustainable harvest of deepwater shrimp and precious coral fishery resources while preventing overfishing from occurring. For the last 15 years, there has been a very low-level and only sporadic commercial fishing in these fisheries. The proposed 2022-2025 ACLs are the same as the past two years for deepwater shrimp and the past three years for precious corals. Past years’ harvests have been well below their respective ACLs. There are only three current Federal permits in the deepwater shrimp fishery. There have been fewer than three precious coral permits for many years, and currently none with the last permit expired in 2020. As such, we expect little to no economic impact from this action. |
