Title: Authorizing Permissive Use of the "Next Generation" Broadcast Television Standard (GN Docket No. 16-142) | |
Abstract:
In this proceeding, the Commission seeks to authorize television broadcasters to use the "Next Generation" ATSC 3.0 broadcast television transmission standard on a voluntary, market-driven basis, while they continue to deliver current-generation digital television broadcast service to their viewers. In the Report and Order, the Commission adopted rules to afford broadcasters flexibility to deploy ATSC 3.0-based transmissions, while minimizing the impact on, and costs to, consumers and other industry stakeholders. In the 2nd R&O, the Commission provided additional guidance to broadcasters deploying Next Gen TV. In 2021, the Commission made a technical modification to the rules governing the use of a distribution transmission system by a television station to account for deployment of ATSC 3.0. Further, the Commission released an FNPRM that sought comment on rule changes designed to preserve over-the-air viewers access to the widest possible range of television programming. The 3rd FNPRM sought comment on the state of the Next Gen TV transition. |
