Title: ●Amendment 49 to the Fishery Management Plan for the Snapper-Grouper Fishery of the South Atlantic Region (Snapper-Grouper FMP) (Amendment 49)
Abstract:

The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) proposes regulations to implement Amendment 49.  The South Atlantic Fishery Management Council approved Amendment 49 for review by the Secretary of Commerce at their September 2022 meeting.  Amendment 49 proposes to increase the catch levels (acceptable biological catch and annual catch limits), sector allocations, and management measures for greater amberjack based on the Southeast Data, Assessment and Review 59 Update (2020) stock assessment.  The assessment determined that the stock is not overfished and not undergoing overfishing.  Management measures would reduce the commercial minimum size limit, increase the seasonal commercial trip limits, and revise the April spawning closure for greater amberjack.  The plan amendment would also remove the recreational annual catch target for snapper grouper species, because that target is not actively being used in the management of species under the Snapper-Grouper FMP.  Amendment 49 would base conservation and management measures on the best scientific information available and increase net benefits to the Nation, consistent with the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act and its National Standards.
