Title: Social Security Number Fraud Prevention Act | |
Abstract:
In compliance with the Social Security Number Fraud Prevention Act of 2017 (the Act) (Public Law 115-59; 42 U.S.C. 405 note), enacted on September 15, 2017, the Department of Energy (DOE) proposes to create a regulation that specifies the circumstances under which, pursuant to a Secretarial waiver, DOE elements may transmit through physical mail documents containing full (nine digit) Social Security numbers. The Act prohibits Federal agencies from including individuals’ Social Security number on documents sent by mail unless the head of the agency determines that the inclusion of the full Social Security number on the document is necessary (section 2(a), Public Law 115-59). This proposed rulemaking implements the waiver requirements of the Act for the Department of Energy. There are no anticipated costs or burdens created through this regulation with an impact outside of the Department of Energy. This Notice of Proposed Rule Making (NPRM) seeks comment on this proposal. |
