Title: Land Uses; Special Uses; Carbon Capture and Storage | |
Abstract:
The Forest Service is proposing an amendment to its regulations at 36 CFR 251.54 to provide an exemption for carbon capture and storage, allowing for perpetual use and occupancy on National Forest System (NFS) lands of carbon dioxide. The Forest Service is also proposing a definition for "carbon capture and storage." This final rulemaking amends initial screening criteria in existing regulations to allow for permanent storage of carbon dioxide on NFS lands to support carbon capture and storage related activities and will help meet the Administration's priority of tackling the climate crisis. To inform development of this rulemaking effort, early and proactive engagement was held with the tribal community through a tribal forum and government-to-government tribal consultation where feedback on the draft rule was provided and incorporated. |
