Title: ●Family Unity Principles | |
Abstract:
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) proposes regulations promoting family unity principles: defining what constitutes a separation of a family encountered at the U.S. border or ports-of-entry; detailing the limited circumstances when DHS may separate parents or legal guardians from their minor child; and establishing when DHS must facilitate a separated family’s reunification. This proposed rule would codify into regulation current judicial standards and agency policies governing DHS family separation and reunification decisions. The proposed rule would also establish specific tracking, recordkeeping, and information-sharing requirements related to certain families, when appropriate and legally permissible. |
