Title: FMVSS No. 208 THOR-50M Compliance Option
Abstract: This notice proposes incorporating the THOR-50M (THOR), a new 50th percentile male anthropomorphic test device (ATD), into FMVSS No. 208, "Occupant crash protection," for use in compliance testing at the manufacturers' option. A separate contemporaneous rulemaking action will propose to incorporate THOR into 49 CFR Part 572. This rulemaking action will allow NHTSA to permit manufacturers to select the use of THOR in belted and unbelted barrier crash testing instead of the Hybrid III 50th percentile male ATD. This action will propose injury assessment reference values (lARVs) for use with the THOR in the frontal crash test requirements of FMVSS No. 208 that are comparable to the lARVs currently used with the current Hybrid Ill dummy.
