Title: Revise Seafood Inspection Program Regulations | |
Abstract:
The current regulations for Inspection and Certification by the NMFS Seafood Inspection Program have not been significantly updated since the 1970s. They contain outdated language, procedures, and definitions, and have many inconsistencies with current practices of the Seafood Inspection Program. This rule updates and revise the Seafood Inspection Program's implementing regulations by updating and adding definitions, eliminating, and updating certain procedures, and clarifying current language and titles (e.g., sampler vs. inspector). The updates and changes are necessary to reflect current operating procedures of the Seafood Inspection Program, and modern business practices (e.g., use of credit cards and the Internet). In addition, the regulations for the U.S. Standards for Grades of Fish and Fishery Products would be revised to increase uniformity in inspection results, decrease inspection time, and maintain fairness, reliability, and validity of inspection results. Sample size, sample unit, grading procedures, and grade determinations have all been updated and codified in the regulations. |
