Title: ●Fisheries Off West Coast States; West Coast Salmon Fisheries; Federal Salmon Regulations for Overfished Species Rebuilding Plans
Abstract:

This action will remove from regulation the rebuilding plans for the Queets River coho salmon stock and for the Strait of Juan de Fuca coho salmon. NMFS published a final rule in 2021 implementing a rebuilding plan for Strait of Juan de Fuca coho salmon and a rebuilding plan for Queets River coho salmon. Both of these stocks were determined by NMFS in 2018 to be overfished under the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act (MSA). Based on the most recent assessment of Queets River coho salmon and Strait of Juan de Fuca coho salmon, completed in February 2024, the stocks are no longer overfished and NMFS made a status determination of rebuilt under the MSA, thus there is no longer a need to manage fisheries on these stocks under the rebuilding plans. This action is not expected to have economic impacts as the rebuilding plans adopted the Fishery Management Plan’s existing harvest control rule and management measures.
