Title: Expand Uses of SSI Dedicated Accounts | |
Abstract:
We propose to update SSI dedicated account rules so that permissible impairment-related expenses include current maintenance, such as costs incurred in obtaining food, shelter, clothing, medical care, and personal comfort items. Our goals are to simplify our policies and reduce burdens on SSI recipients’ families and SSA staff. The development of this regulation was informed by correspondences from and meetings with advocacy groups representing claimants and beneficiaries, who express that rulemaking in this area would be helpful. For example, during a virtual Social Security Advisory Board-hosted roundtable held on November 19, 2020, multiple stakeholders identified the complexity of the rules associated with using funds from dedicated accounts as hindering their ability to support disabled children. In addition to SSA, there were eight presenters on the panel. |
