Title: ●Marine Mammals; Incidental Take During Specified Activities; North Slope, Alaska | |
Abstract:
Under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) promulgated regulations in 2021 that authorized the incidental take by Level B harassment of small numbers of polar bears (Ursus maritimus) and Pacific walrus (Odobenus rosmarus divergens) in the Southern Beaufort Sea and adjacent coast of Alaska during oil and gas industry activities for 5 years. This rulemaking action would amend those regulations to allow the incidental take of small numbers of polar bears by Level A and Level B harassment. No lethal take would be authorized under these regulations, and the regulations pertaining to Pacific walrus would remain unchanged. |
