DOL/MSHA RIN: 1219-AB99 Publication ID: Fall 2024
Title: ●Testing, Evaluation, and Approval of Equipment for Use in Underground Mines
Abstract:

The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) proposes to revise 30 CFR parts 19, 20, 22, 23, and 27, which set out testing, evaluation, and approval requirements for various equipment intended for use in underground gassy or dust-laden mining environments.  Under this proposal, MSHA would accept voluntary consensus standards that are suitable for all gassy mining environments and provide protection against fire or explosion dangers.  This proposed rulemaking is intended to promote the use of innovative and advanced technologies that lead to improvements in mine safety.  This rulemaking was initiated by stakeholder recommendations; specifically, MSHA received recommendations to reduce government-unique standards and to use voluntary consensus standards to evaluate and approve equipment for use in potentially hazardous mining environments.  Throughout the rulemaking process, MSHA will widely solicit stakeholder participation by holding virtual and in-person hearings.
