Title: ●2025-2026 Mackerel, Squid, and Butterfish Specifications
Abstract:

The Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council finalized specification recommendations for the species managed under the Mackerel, Squid, and Butterfish Fishery Management Plan during several of its 2024 meetings: June 2024:  Reviewed and reaffirmed projected 2025 specifications for chub mackerel, Illex squid, and longfin squid; and October 2024:  Reviewed and reaffirmed projected 2025 recommendations for Atlantic mackerel; and recommended new 2025 and projected 2026 specifications for butterfish. During its December 2025 meeting, the Council is scheduled to review input from staff and its Law Enforcement Committee and discuss whether to recommend reducing the minimum size for square mesh used on directed butterfish trawl trips.  This proposed rule would implement the Council’s recommended 2026-2026 mackerel, squid, and butterfish specifications and minimum mesh size recommendation (if applicable) under Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act (MSA) 303(c)/304(b) authority.  This proposed rule would also correct/clarify several existing regulations, which would be implemented under MSA 305(d) authority.
