| Title: ●Pacific Island Fisheries; Catch and Retention Limits for Striped Marlin in the Western and Central Pacific Ocean North of the Equator | |
|
Abstract:
NMFS will propose catch and retention limits for Western and Central North Pacific Ocean (WCNPO) striped marlin by Hawaii-based fisheries. WCNPO striped marlin are caught within the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC) Convention Area north of the Equator. The stock is currently subject to overfishing, but is not overfished and is rebuilding according to domestic stock status determination criteria. Due to the large geographic range of this stock, it is fished by international fisheries in both international waters and the exclusive economic zones of other countries. Catch in all U.S. fisheries account for about 14.8 percent of total annual catch for this stock in recent years. This action will be taken to meet U.S. obligations under Conservation and Management Measure (CMM) 2024-06 for WCNPO striped marlin adopted by the WCPFC in December 2024, and pursuant to NMFS rulemaking authorities under Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act 303(c) and 304(b). |
