Abstract:
THE PROVISIONS OF SECTIONS 9 AND 37 OF THE SHIPPING ACT, 1916, REQUIRE MARITIME ADMINISTRATION APPROVAL OF THE TRANSFER OF OWNERSHIP, REGISTRY AND FLAG, OR CHARTER, LEASE, OR MORTGAGE OF U.S. CITIZEN- OWNED DOCUMENTED AND UNDOCUMENTED VESSELS TO A NON-CITIZEN OF THE UNITED STATES, OR THE TRANSFER OF FOREIGN FLAG VESSELS BY FOREIGN OWNERS, AS REQUIRED BY VARIOUS CONTRACTUAL REQUIREMENTS. THIS APPROVAL IS INTENDED TO GIVE THE MARITIME ADMINISTRATION AND THE DEFENS
