THE FATAL ACCIDENT REPORTING SYSTEM (FARS) IS A CENSUS ALL FATAL MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENTS IN THE U.S. DATA IS EXTRACTED FROM EXISTING STATE RECORDS AND AUTOMATED FOR THE AGENCY'S USE IN HIGHWAY AND MOTOR VEHICL SAFETY PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION, TREND ANALYSIS, AND PROGRAM EVALUATION.
