DATA COLLECTED FROM STATE AND LOCAL OFFICIALS ON NEW CONSTRUCTION AUTHORIZED BY BUILDING PERMITS PROVIDE DETAILED GEOGRAPHIC DATA NEEDED BY PLANNERS, POLICY MAKERS, ECONOMISTS AND OTHERS. THE SERIES ON HOUSING AUTHORIZATIONS, A COMPONENT OF THE INDEX OF LEADING ECONOMIC INDICATORS, IS USED TO ESTIMATE HOUSING STARTS.
