Abstract:
THESE STANDARDS SPECIFY PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS FOR THE VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER, ITS INSTALLATION, FORMAT, AND CONTENT TO SIMPLY INFORMATION RETRIEVAL, AND INCREASE THE EFFICIENCY OF DEFECT RECALL CAMPAIGNS. MANUFACTURERS MUST LABEL MAJOR COMPONENT PARTS OF DESIGNAT HIGH-THEFT CARLINES WITH THE VIN AND MARK CERTAIN REPLACEMENT PARTS WITH THE LETTER "R."
