This information collection is approved for use until December 31, 199 Upon its next submission, CDC should outline what initiatives it is undertaking to either improve state and local voluntary reporting or develop an accurate measure of the extent of the underreporting of all the diseases included here, most importantly foodborne and salmonella illnesses. For foodborne illnesses (including salmonella), CDC itself has acknowledged that current data are too limited to provide an adequate picture of the extent of the problem. Because of the underreporting and other limitations of the data, CDC should consider what measures are needed to improve the reporting of foodborne diseases.

SURVEILLANCE DATA ARE ESSENTIAL TO MEASURE TRENDS IN DISEASE INCIDENCE AND EVALUATE EFFECTIVENESS OF PREVENTION EFFORTS. STATE AND TERRITORIAL HEALTH DEPARTMENTS COMPILE THESE SUMMARIES FROM DATA COLLECTED DURING DISEASE INVESTIGATIONS AND FROM DATA FURNISHED BY LOCAL HEALTH DEPARTMENTS.
