OMB approves this information collection request, as amended by NSF's memoranda to OMB of 01/23/91 and 01/25/91. In addition, NSF has agreed to collect data for Question 5b of the survey in a field test mode, as the current open-ended format does not lend itself to comparability and thus lacks sufficient practical utility for the agency. NSF will use the responses from this question to develop more systematic questions for the next version of this survey.

Abstract:
THESE TWO SURVEYS OF ACADMIC RESEARCH FACILITIES (1992 AND 1994) WILL UPDATE DATA FROM PREVIOUS BIENNIAL SURVEYS IN 1988 AND 1990 AND WILL DOCUMENT TRENDS IN FACILITIES AMOUNT, CONDITION, ADEQUACY, COST, AND NEEDS. FINDINGS WILL BE USED TO INFORM INSTITUTION, STATE AND FEDERAL FACILITIES PROGRAMS AND POLICY MAKERS ON RECENT TRENDS REGARDI RESEARCH FACILITIES.
