Terms of Clearance:
Approved, through April 1993. This collection of information expired in July 1988. OMB is approving the collection in place including the program change for one year, until such time as the FHWA has had further time to make decisions on issues raised in the August 16, 1991 NPRM (RIN #2125-A076). It is not clear from the submission how effectively the current program is or will meet the purpose and scope of the NPRM (i.e. to permit the States considerable flexibility in allowing them to tailor their verification programs to their individual operations and authority, issues which we anticipate will be resolved in the final rulemaking. We anticipate in the annual ICB review learning from FHWA what specific plans they have to further review and revise information collection requirements in the FMCSRs and to implement recommendations in the December 1990 task force repor

Abstract:
THE DRIVER VEHICLE INSPECTION AND MAINTENANCE RECORDS REQUIRED OF MOTOR CARRIERS OPERATING IN INTERSTATE OR FOREIGN COMMERCE, AND THEIR DRIVERS, BY 49 CFR 396 ARE USED TO IDENTIFY DEFECTS LIKELY TO AFFECT SAFETY OF OPERATION OF TRUCKS AND BUSES EMPLOYED BY THOSE CARRIERS AND TO RECORD INSPECTION, REPAIR AND MAINTENANCE ACTIVITIES.
