Terms of Clearance:
Approved as amended by ED's memoranda to OMB of 5/26/95 and 6/1/95. As ED has agreed, approval for the new instruction that institutions submit itemized assessed and outstanding collection costs is conditional on ED's analysis of the additional burdens imposed by this new requirement relative to its utility. ED shall report on this analysis with its next clearance request, and shall recommend whether to continue collecting the information based on the analysis.

Abstract:
THIS FORM IS USED TO COLLECT PERTINENT DATA REGARDING DEFAULTED STUDENT LOANS FROM INSTITUTIONS PARTICIPATING IN THE PERKINS LOANS PROGRAMS. THE ED FORM 553 SERVES AS THE TRANSMITTAL DOCUMENT IN THE ASSIGNMENT OF SUCH DEFAULTED LOANS TO THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT FOR COLLECTION.
