This collection is approved with the following conditions: ITA should submit to OMB a comparitive paper which looks at the difference in data results and response rates between the in-flig ht survey and the boarding area survey approach within the next 18 months. In addition, ITA should look at increasing the fees it charges for the data collected in this survey to include the overhead cost of research in improving the respons rate. This is a legitimate cost of the survey that can be passed on in the fees charged to businesses which request the data -- the Census Bureau is an example of doing this. It will also provided the needed funds to improve the quality of the data collected.

Abstract:
The Department of Commerce assist in the collection, analysis, and dissemination of tourism data. This survey is required to fulfill department and agencies directives to provide information on international travel characteristics and spending patterns and service exports and imports for the U.S. The population of potential respondents consists of international air passengers who are departing the U.S. on participating airlines.
