Approved consistent with changes described in INS memos of 10-14- 99 and 10-26-99. INS will forward copies of forms with burden statements in accordance with the Paperwork Reduction Act of 1995 to OMB within one month. Approval is for two years at which time this collection will be resubmitted to OMB in light of changes to the final rule. These changes shall include a discussion of electronic maintenance of the I-9.

The form I-9 was developed to facilitate compliance with section 274A of the Immigration and Nationality Act, as amended by the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, making employment of unauthorized aliens unlawful and diminishing the flow of illegal workers in the United States.
