This collection is approved, subject to the changes cited in the CDC memos dated 10/21/99 and 10/26/99. In addition, it is very important that CDC raise the rate of response in this study. As agreed upon, CDC will evaluate the rate of response after 1 year. If the response rate is not at least 75 percent, CDC will explore the use of additional incentive payments or other methods of boosting the response rate. At this time CDC will consult with OMB, and resubmit the package for approval if necessary.

Abstract:
NCEH has been monitoring the occurrence of serious birth defects and genetic diseases in Atlanta since 1967. Its primary purpose is to describe the spatial and temporal patterns of birth defects occurence and serve as an early warning system for new teratogens. Since 1993, the Division of Birth Defects and Pediatirc Genetics has also been conducting the Birth Defects Risk Factor Surveillance (BDRFS) study, a case-control study of risk factors for selected birth defects.
