Approved consistent with changes and clarifications in SAMHSA memos of 9-25-00 and 10-3-00. For respondents that select more than one race, OMB is approving a question that offers the respondent the opportunity to choose on race that best describes him or herself. If a respondent does not select a single race in response to this quesiton, the interviewer should not probe further. The respondent's decision not to choose a single race should be coded. SAMHSA will also find a means for recording whether the respondent in any way questioned why the interviewer was asking for the selecting of only one race. OMB is approving this for research purposes in support of the Tabulation Working Group of the Interagency Committee for the review of Standards for Data on Race and Ethnicity. SAMHSA shall report to OMB on the effects of this quesiton. In particular, SAMHSA shall report to OMB on the interaction between Hispanic status, age, and responses to the race question.
